Six Sigma - Lean Healthcare Workshop

Do you want to ...
Improve Quality? Reduce Errors? Lower Costs?

Are you interested in initiating Six Sigma and/or Lean Healthcare techniques in your organization? Do you want to learn not just about the theory but also the essential tools and how to use them? Is it time to reap the benefits from improved quality, reduced errors, and lower costs? This two day seminar provides background information on key principles and concepts and also covers the most frequently used diagnostic and analytical tools needed to make your program operational.

Our Six Sigma - Lean Healthcare Workshop is now available for open enrollment on the following date:

Location: Orlando, Florida

Date: January 15 & 16, 2004 (Registration required by December 15, 2003)

Who Should Attend

This training is appropriate for a diverse range of personnel because commitment needs to be top down for support, bottom up for implementation, and cross functional with support departments included.

  • Hospital executives (CFO, CEO, COO, Vice Presidents)
  • Department Directors
  • Healthcare staff (RN's, technicians, therapists)
  • Ancillary Department staff (Quality, Lab, Radiology, Pharmacy, etc)

Workshop Schedule

On day one, we adapt the principles of Lean Manufacturing to the healthcare environment. Participants will be provided with instruction, followed by the opportunity to simulate the techniques discussed in hands-on test simulation sessions. Instructional material will be provided to all participants.

Discussion of Lean process objectives. Definition of Key Concepts (Lean, Value Added, and Non-Value Added). Effect of lead time and batching. Discussion of Seven Wastes as applied to healthcare. (Overproduction, Transportation, Excess Inventory, Excess Motion, Waiting, Non-Value Added Processing, Defects). Lean implementation tools. Comparison of Lean vs traditional methods.

Course Outline Day 2 - Six Sigma:

On day two, we present the Six Sigma methodology that has dramatically improved processes for Motorola, Honeywell, and GE. Six Sigma is a flexible methodology that has evolved from prior methodologies such as TQM, Lean, QFD, DOE, and FMEA yet has distinct characteristics of its own. Because the workshop size is limited, participants can interact throughout the instruction phase. A workshop manual is included. Statistical concepts are presented and there are exercises to facilitate the understanding of the tools presented.

We provide the participant with background information on the Six Sigma methodology,
The principles behind Six Sigma and what differentiates it from other process improvement methods,
Integration of Six Sigma with other key process improvement methods (Lean Healthcare, Total Quality Management, Constraint Management).
Key concepts utilized in Six Sigma (Strategic Alignment, Customer Focus, Current State Analysis, Creative Solution Development Techniques, Statistical Process Control, Capability, Normal Distribution Pattern, Root Cause Analysis, Continuous Improvement, Measurement and Data Collection)
Recommended project management techniques
Instruction on Six Sigma analytical and diagnostic tools
Specific instruction on each of the following Six Sigma tools will be provided:

    Process mapping,
    Process dependency worksheet,
    Is/Is Not analysis,
    Pareto analysis,
    Cost of quality,
    Quality Function Deployment (QFD),
    Cost/Benefit Analysis,
    Force Field Analysis,
    Impact Analysis,
    Cause/Effect diagrams,
    Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA),
SPC Control Charts - development, testing, and analysis
